Canon PowerShot SD780/IXUS 100 IS Reviews

TrustedReviews reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 / IXUS 100 IS and writes;
“It’s a nice looking camera with excellent build quality and a good range of features. Performance is good, especially in low light, and the image quality is also generally very good. However the awkward handling and almost pointless tiny viewfinder limit its appeal.”
Rating:

MacWorld reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 / IXUS 100 IS and writes;
“Canon has taken the concept of a fashionable, easy-to-use point-and-shoot that also performs well and knocked it out of the park. The PowerShot SD780 IS is sure to turn heads and keep casual photograpers happy with its image quality and fun features, though you don’t get much in the way of manual controls.”
Rating:

DCI reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS and writes;
“Canon PowerShot SD780 IS a decent camera poured into a very small package. It may not have the world’s most impressive range of manual controls, nor the biggest zoom we’ve ever seen, but it shoots well, with excellent image sharpness”
Rating: N/A

KenRockwell reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS and writes;
“The SD780 is the smallest good camera I’ve ever used. I’d suggest it as a first choice for a pocket tag-along digital camera.”
Rating: N/A

LaptopMag reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 / IXUS 100 IS and writes;
“Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is a solid mid-range point-and-shoot: it has decent image quality, records HD video, and is one of the most attractive pocket cameras we’ve seen in a while. Some flaws, however, such as overexposed shots when using Macro and low-light performance, hold it back from a higher rating. But casual photographers might rather have a camera this tiny than one that excels at close-ups or low-light shooting.”
Rating:

NeoCamera reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 / IXUS 100 IS and writes;
“the image quality is below average with too little detail retention due to noise-reduction and significant amount of edge-softness. Needless to say, when compared to the current ultra-compact champion, the Fuji F200 EXR, the SD780 does not look too good.”
Rating:

CNET reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 / IXUS 100 IS and writes;
“The good: Very small; simple operation; very good photo and HD movie quality; HDMI out. The bad: No optical zoom in Movie mode; generally soft photos; mixed performance. The bottom line: If you need an ultracompact camera for your pocket or purse, strongly consider the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS.”
Rating:

PhotographyBlog reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 / IXUS 100 IS and writes;
“the camera is pleasingly responsive, intuitive to use for anyone who has handled a Canon IXUS before and, being small enough to slip into a shirt top pocket is the kind of camera you’ll carry with you anywhere and everywhere. The result? A greater likelihood of taking that winning shot. It all adds up to a Photography Blog Recommended award for the Canon Digital IXUS 100 IS.”
Rating:

ITReviews reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS and writes;
” Overall, the quality of the finished images is well above average, with detailed definition and vibrant colours…Canon’s latest Digital IXUS is targeted at the style-conscious snapper who wants to look cool while letting the camera do most of the work”

Cameras.uk reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 / IXUS 100 IS and writes;
“The Canon IXUS 100 IS is a very good, pocket sized digital camera. It scores highly for picture quality, style and features, but it is expensive. If it is within your budget then it is likely to be hard to beat, but other digital cameras beat it for value for money.”
Rating:

DPInterface reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS and writes;
“Overall, the Canon PowerShot SD780 Digital ELPH aka Digital IXUS 100 produced sharp photos with low noise (usable up to ISO 800) and nicely saturated colors. The camera’s lens was very good too, with low distortion and no fringing”
Rating: N/A

CNET.asia reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 / IXUS 100 IS and writes;
The good: Sleek styling; HD video function; decent image quality and performance. The bad: Lacks wide-angle optics; small form factor may not go down well with users having larger hands. The bottom line: This petite powerhouse is Canon’s smallest ever Ixus camera and its stylish looks should resonate with those who want a capable and tiny point-and-shoot.”
Rating:

InfoSync reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS and writes;
Pros: Super Compact and visually appealing. Great overall image performance. Excellent menus and impressive features. Cons: Small LCD. Difficult to stabilize due to camera’s size. Inadequate viewfinder. “

ImagingResource reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS and writes;
” so if you’re looking for a very very small 780p camera, the SD780 might serve well. The Canon SD780 is a nice looking little digital camera that’s slim and pretty fast, but it doesn’t measure up to Canon’s better current pocket cameras… “

Steve’sDigicams reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS and writes;
” I truly enjoyed using the SD780 IS. This camera produces images that rival that of larger more expensive digicams, and offers AF performance that leaves many of them in the dust as well… I have no problem giving the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS Digital ELPH a high recommendation to anyone in the market for an ultra-compact and stylish camera. “
Rating: N/A

PCMag reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS and writes;
“don’t overlook the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS. In this camera, Canon has delivered all the basics: great image quality, HD video capture, and fast speeds in a small body.”
Rating:

CameraLabs reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS and writes;
“if you desire wider coverage or images which are sharper across the frame, then look elsewhere, such as to Canon’s own IXUS 870 IS / SD880 IS. But there’s no denying the physical appeal of the IXUS 100 IS / SD780 IS… Ultimately if you’re after a slim, stylish compact which handles itself well in general-use and can trade that against its weaknesses, then it comes recommended.”
Rating:

DigitalCameraReview reviews the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS and writes;
“All in all, though, casual shooters won’t likely drill down into the SD780’s huge images enough to notice its weaknesses, and while it may not rival Canon’s 10-megapixel-and-under cameras for smoothness, the SD780’s sensor/processor combo still captures the essence of a Canon image: vibrant, crisp, and contrasty.”

I actually researched all of the Canon cameras before purchasing this one and though I wasn’t totally sure it was the one for me (mostly because of the small size)….now I’m hooked! This camera is amazing! Easy to learn, easy to use and the size works much better for me now that I’m used to it…and great for travelling!

Canon PowerShot SD780/IXUS 100 IS Press Release

Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 18 February 2009: Canon today strengthens its reputation for excellence in digital compact camera design with two new models: the slimmest ever Digital IXUS model, the 12.1 Megapixel Digital IXUS 100 IS, and the 10 Megapixel Digital IXUS 95 IS. Both models feature a new Smart Auto mode, which uses Canon’s Scene Detection Technology to help users take great shots with ease. The Digital IXUS 100 IS also includes the option to shoot HD movies (1280 x 720, 30fps) and HDMI connectivity.

Replacing the Digital IXUS 85 IS, the Digital IXUS 100 IS features a striking, 18.4mm wide stainless steel body, finished in a choice of silver, black, gold or red – making it ideal for the most prestigious of occasions. The Digital IXUS 95 IS, successor to the Digital IXUS 80 IS, offers an ultra-stylish, take-anywhere alternative in silver, grey, blue or pink. Both models offer framing flexibility via a 3.0x optical zoom, with consistently blur-free results provided by Canon’s optical Image Stabilizer.

Built for stunning images
Generous resolutions of 10.0 Megapixels and 12.1 Megapixels allow for huge A2+ size prints or the freedom to crop images to improve composition while retaining outstanding image detail. The addition of Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor allows both models to deliver ultra-fast operation, and rich, low-noise images with outstanding clarity and colour reproduction.

Beauty and brains
For incredible pictures with extreme ease, both models incorporate a new
Smart Auto mode. This uses Canon’s Scene Detection Technology to analyse the shooting scene in detail – checking subject brightness, contrast, distance and overall hue. The camera then instantly selects one of 18 possible modes, to ensure perfect settings for the scene.

Thanks to DIGIC 4 processing, Canon’s intelligent technologies are now more accurate than ever. Improved Motion Detection aids blur-free capture of moving subjects. i-Contrast brightens the dark areas of a photo without blowing out correctly-exposed areas. Face Detection Technology can register multiple faces in a frame and adjusts settings for better results; with the Digital IXUS 100 IS, this includes new Blink Detection, which helps avoid the disappointment of a mistimed portrait shot. FaceSelf-Timer simplifies group shots or self portraits by waiting until the user enters the frame before shooting. Auto Red-Eye Correction removes the unwanted red-eye effect caused by flash photography, either during or after shooting.

In addition, both models offer a smarter, newly improved User Interface – making functions even easier and more intuitive to access.

Movies and more
Despite its tiny proportions, the Digital IXUS 100 IS includes the ability to shoot pin-sharp, ultra-detailed video clips in High Definition (1280 x 720) – which can be played back on any HDTV via an HDMI connection. The Digital IXUS 95 IS offers fun movie capture at VGA resolution, with the option of Long Play movies for extended shooting.

On both models, a 2.5” PureColor LCD II offers bright, detailed image preview and review. The inclusion of an optical viewfinder offers users an alternative way to compose shots.
“United by some of our smartest technology yet, these models offer two compelling new choices to Digital IXUS fans: prestige, slimline design, or great style for everyday use,” commented Rainer Fuehres, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe.
