Software MacKiev still offers the illegal Windows ANSI as export option.

Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 9

After Software MacKiev bought Family Tree Maker from Ancestry.com, their first order of business was to bring Family Tree Maker 2014 back to market again. They introduced a slightly updated version of Family Tree Maker 2014 on 2016 March 1. As this release, Build 429, followed Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker Service 2014 Service Pack 7, it technically is Family Tree Maker Service Pack 8.

Ftm 2014.1

Software MacKiev started selling Family Tree Maker 2014 licenses to new users, and upgrades to users of older versions of Family Tree Maker, but did not provide a free update to users of Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014.
Their explanation for this is that they only wanted to release an updater when they were ready to recommend the update to all Family Tree Maker 2014 users. I do not agree with that reasoning, as Software MacKiev considered their new release good enough to sell to both new and other Family Tree Maker users.

Just before the end of 2016, the New Year's Edition of the Family Tree Maker News newsletter announced the availability of the long-awaited upgrade, for both Family Tree Maker 2014 and FTM 3 for Mac users.

Just before the end of 2016, the New Year's Edition of the Family Tree Maker News newsletter announced the availability of the long-awaited free update, for both Family Tree Maker 2014 and FTM 3 for Mac users. The Family Tree Maker 2014 Update is free for all Family Tree Maker 2014 users, both Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 user and Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 users. The Family Tree Maker 3 for Mac Update is free for all FTM 3 for Mac users, both Ancestry.com FTM 3 for Mac users and Software MacKiev FTM 3 for Mac users.
This article focuses on Family Tree Maker 2014 for Windows, but most of the information presented here applies to FTM 3 for Mac too.

Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 9 offers hardly any new functionality, it offers stability and performance improvements instead.

hardly anything new

The exact Family Tree Maker 2014 version provided by this update is Family Tree Maker 2014 Build 501, or, as I prefer to call it, Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 9. Do not expect any big new features, that is not what this Service Pack is about. In his interview about the Family Tree Maker acquisition, Software MacKiev president Jack Minsky promised to focus on improving the stability and performance. Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 9 offers hardly any new functionality, it offers stability and performance improvements instead.

The most significant improvement provided by Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 over Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 is that GEDCOM files finally have a valid GEDCOM header now.

Service Pack 8 added some few hundred new backgrounds and embellishments for use in reports, and if you are coming from Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 7, instead of Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 8, these will be new to you. The most significant improvement provided by Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 over Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 is that GEDCOM files finally have a valid GEDCOM header now. Service Pack 9 adds one new feature: the ability to password-protect trees on export.

file format

Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 8 introduced a new file format for Family Tree Maker databases. Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 9 does not use the file format introduced with Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 8, but is again different. Whatever version of Family Tree Maker you're coming from, you'll have to convert your databases, and will be prompted to do so.

backup & convert logic

Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 (Service Pack 8) introduced a dialog box that prompts you to convert your database, with a Retain this file as it is and convert a copy option. That option is checked by default, and that is a good default for most databases. However, because of the way TreeSync works, Retain this file as it is and convert a copy is the wrong default for linked databases; changing the filename will break the TreeSync link between the desktop and web database. To retain the TreeSync link between your desktop and web database after conversion to the new file format, the filename needs to remain unchanged; you need to convert the original database, not a copy.

updated backup & convert logic

Software MacKiev agrees with me that their original backup & convert logic, introduced with Service Pack 8, isn't the right backup & convert logic, and they are updating it. They expect to release a new updater in about a week.
The new backup & convert logic will always convert the original database, instead of a copy. This retains the database names you are used to, and avoids breaking the TreeSync link. There will still be an option to make a backup copy of the original database before conversion, and it will still be checked by default. The copy will be probably made to a subdirectory, to maintain the original filename. This way, the default choice is the safe choice, as it should be.

TreeSync

There are no changes to TreeSync. None whatsoever.
Family Tree Maker's TreeSync functionality is still as good and as bad as it was late in 2015, when Ancestry.com discontinued Family Tree Maker.
Ancestry.com and Software MacKiev are focussing their development efforts on the promised TreeSync replacement.
TreeSync is still noticeably faster than it used to be, because related processes were optimised.

TreeSync is faster than it used to be, because related processes were optimised.

keeping your tree linked

If you are updating Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker using Software MacKiev's original Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 9 (Build 501), and want to keep your tree linked, you must uncheck the Retain this file as it is and convert a copy option. Manually make a backup copy of your current Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker databases before updating to Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker Servide Pack 9, by copying the files into a subdirectory.

Software MacKiev recomemnds making backups from within Family Tree Maker, using File Backup. They recommend making backups before any serious action, so they actually recommend making three backups before updating.
Tey recommend starting by compacting your file, and the compact feature makes a backup before compacting. Then they recommend making a backup of the compacted database and syncing your database before upgrading. Finally, they recommend making backups of your synced databases before starting the update process.
When these three backups are made on the same day, each one defaulting to overwriting the previous one, hence my advice to copy a good version of the file to a subdirectory.

getting your database link back

If you converted a file with the default Retain this file as it is and convert a copy setting, the converted database will not have the TreeSync link. However, because you choose to Retain this file as it is and convert a copy, you still have the original file. That original file and your existing online tree are still linked to each other. To get that TreeSync link into the new version of Family Tree Maker, open the original database, and when prompted, uncheck the Retain this file as it is and convert a copy option.
Do make a backup first, just in case something goes wrong.

plug-ins

There currently are two third-party plug-ins available for Family Tree Maker 2014: Progeny Genealogy's Charting Companion and Stefan Harms's Family Book Creator. You may need to reinstall your plug-ins after updating Family Tree Maker 2014.

Just like Family Tree Maker itself, Stefan Harms' Family Book Creator is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit builds. The Family Tree Maker installer automatically picks the 64-bit build if you are running a 64-bit system, which is probably the case. Family Tree Maker's about dialog box tells you which build you have, but in an odd way; if your Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker version number is 22.0.0.410, it is a 32-bit build, and if the version number is 22.0.0.1410, it is a 64-bit build.

Family Book Creator comes in several editions; there are separate editions for Family Tree Maker 2010, Family Tree Maker 2012, Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014, and Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014. If you are currently using any Ancestry.com release of Family Tree Maker, you'll need to download and install the edition for Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014. You do not need to remove the currently installed edition of Family Book Creator. It is OK to have multiple editions of Family Book Creator on your system.

You do not need to keep Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 around, but you do not need to remove it either.

keep Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker?

When you're using the updater to update from the last Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 release to Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker, you are updating from Family Tree Maker Service Pack 7 to Family Tree Maker Service Pack 9. You do not need to keep Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 around, but you do not need to remove it either. Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 and Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 default to different directories, because Family Tree Maker is a Microsoft .NET application, you can actually run different versions of Family Tree Maker side by side.

The current updater offers the option to uninstall Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 before installing Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014. This option is unchecked by default, and I recommend you leave it unchecked and keep Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 installed until you are satisfied with the switch to Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014.

FTM 2014.1

Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 and Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 have different icons, but it can be hard to tell them apart if you are running them side by side. Since their first release last year, Software MacKiev has been referring to the Software MacKiev-branded Family Tree Maker 2014 as Family Tree Maker 2014.1. You need not check the dialog box to distinguish between Ancestry.com and Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014, you just need to look at the title bar. The title bar shows either the Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 icon or the Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 icon, and Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 9 does not have the title Family Tree Maker 2014, but Family Tree Maker 2014.1 instead.

how to get it

Ancestry.com used to provide Family Tree Maker updates in two ways; through the automated and manual update checks built into Family Tree Maker itself, which would download and run the updater, and through public Knowledge Base articles that included direct links to the latest updaters for you to download. They also, often but not always, alerted everyone to the existence of a Service Pack through their blog.

no blog post

Software MacKiev does not have a blog, but they do have a newsletter, and they sent out a newsletter to inform subscribers of the update. As a Family Tree Maker user, you need to subscribe to Software MacKiev's newsletter just as much as you need to follow Ancestry.com's blog.
If you subscribed to the newsletter already, but did not receive it yet, don't worry that you've somehow been removed from the list. The update is rather big, so to prevent everyone trying to download it at once and overwhelming their download servers, Software MacKiev is sending the newsletter out in several batches instead of to everyone at once.

update check does not work

Ftm

When Software MacKiev introduced Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker back in March of 2016, they told me they would provide the update through Family Tree Maker's update check. Their thinking on this has changed, and Family Tree Maker's update check does not work for this update.
If you check for updates in Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 7 (Build 410), it will misinform you that there are no updates. In fact, right now, even the update check Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 Service Pack 8 (Build 429) will misinform you that there are no updates.
That Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 does not inform you about this update is a permanent situation; Software MacKiev has decided not to use that mechanism. That Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 does not inform you about this update is a temporary one; Software MacKiev is using the newsletter to pace the download of the updates, and will only start informing users through Family Tree Maker itself aftter that.

no public updaters

Software MacKiev has just posted an article in their Support Centre, which expands on their newsletter announcement with a FAQ, and a change log. This support article does not include links to the updater.

There is just one way to get this update: through Software MacKiev's Family Tree Maker Update Centre.

the only way to get this update

There is just one way to get this update: through Software MacKiev's Family Tree Maker Update Centre. A link to the Family Tree Maker Update Centre is included in the email that notified you that there is an update.

The Update Centre provides a download link for the update to registered users only. So, if you have not registered your copy yet, you should take care of that first.
The Update Centre starts with a short form that asks you for your details to confirm that you are a registered user. It immediately checks your details against the registration database, and, if your details match, tells you so, and asks you to choose a Continue button.

When you choose Order Now to finalise your order, you'll be prompted to fill in your mailing address, even if you only ordered the download of the update.

Ftm 2014 Manual Download Windows 10

This Update Centre is a bit like a Wizard; you will be presented with a few more choices before you get to the actual update.
First, you're asked to choose between downloading a single computer license update, or upgrading to the Family 3-Pack License. Second, you're given an option to order backup media; you can choose between an FTM DVD and wooden FTM-branded USB stick. Thirdly, it presents several optional purchases, such as Charting Companion by Progeny Genealogy. Once you're done with all these options, the site will present you with an order form. If you did not choose any of the optional items, it will be an order for zero dollars or Euros. When you choose Order Now to finalise your order, you'll be prompted to fill in your mailing address, even if you only ordered the download of the update. After accepting your details, the Software MacKiev Online Store will once again display your order, for your verification.

When you choose Complete Order, you'll be presented with a new page, with the download link for the update at the bottom of the page. This is a personal download link, that you should not share with third parties. Your link will remain active for many days or weeks, even months, but will go inactive in case of fraud detection.
You can start the download immediately. You will also receive an order confirmation by email. That email contains the same download link.
Download may take a while, the Windows and Mac download are both about 600 MB.

installing

The download provides a real offline updater of about 600 MB. The updater for FTM 2014 is an executable file named FTM2014.1Update.exe. The updater for FTM 3 for Mac 23014 is a disk image named FTM3.1Update.dmg.

As with the original updater for Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker (Service Pack 8), the updater is essentially the full installer for Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014, except that it once again leaves out the tutorial videos to reduce the size of the download. If you are updating from Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014, you already have these videos in the Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 directory. You can also find them on the Software MacKiev website.

The updater checks whether you have a previous version of Family Tree Maker 2014 installed, and will only install the new version if it finds an existing Family Tree Maker 2014 installation.
The updater provides an option to uninstall the old version, this option is unchecked by default. I recommend that you keep it that way; you can uninstall Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 later.

There is only one updater for both the 32-bit and 64-bit edition. The updater will automatically install the 32-bit edition on 32-bit Windows, and the 64-bit edition on 64-bit Windows.
The installer for Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 defaults to installing Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 in Program FilesFamily Tree Maker 2014. This updater for Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 defaults to installing Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 in Program FilesFamily Tree Maker 2014.1. So, if you just agree to the default settings, the updater will not overwrite your existing Family Tree Maker version. You'll end up with both Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 and Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 installed, and will even be able to run both at once.

Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 can save databases in the file formats used by Family Tree Maker 2008/2009, Family Tree Maker 2010, Family Tree Maker 2011 and Family Tree Maker 2012, but not Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014.

converting between Ancestry.com and Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014

Every time you open an Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 database in Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014, you'll be prompted to convert it, and make a backup.
Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 cannot read Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 databases. In case you do want to convert your current Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2014 to Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker 2014 format, Software MacKiev recommends exporting and then importing a GEDCOM file.
