Introduction

The structural stress analyzer AMT - Advanced Manufacturing Techniques is a tool for measuring stress vs. strain for material test samples, bridge models, and other small structures. It is used in the Principles of Engineering PLTW class.
SSA 1000 Software and Drivers should be included on the PC image software bundle for POE computers.

Tensile Test Samples

Tensile test samples for the POE tensile testing lab are available for $35 per bag of 10 + $8.50 Shipping from AMT - Advanced Manufacturing Techniques.
Specify Aluminum, brass, or steel. Aluminum threads gall and are hardest to work with, Aluminum recommended only for projects comparing all 3 materials.
Tensile Test samples and attachments for tensile and bridge testing are in the Top SouthEast Drawer by the instruction computer labelled 'Materials Tester'.
Hooks to test different types of rope and string would be a good enhancement for this machine.
Clamps to enable testing a variety of material would be a good enhancement for this machine.

Instructions

Using_Stress_Analyzer describes how to use. These instructions neglect a very important point:
The SSA1000 requires 0.025' of clearance when a tensile test sample is installed so there is no load for the first 0.025' of displacement.
This is achieved by homing the device, installing the test sample with a finger tight snug fit tension, and then backing off 1/2 turn. this provides 0.5/20 tpi = 0.025' clearance.
The test samples, especially aluminum. can cross thread. Use a little grease on the test sample threads. Remove the adapter and screw the test sample to it and to the top, then engage the threads on the adapter. The adapter threads are larger and less likely to cross thread.
Saving Data Files
The default directory for .dat files is C:SSA1000/data.
Example files are attached for brass, steel, and several aluminum samples. NotAn example file for a brass test sample is attached.

Analysis and Graphing in Excel

The .dat files are comma delimited and should be imported into excel for analysis and graphing of results.
See attached brass2011may23_graph and analyze.xls.
  • Open Excel
  • Click the Data tab at the top
  • Select From Text
  • Browse to your .dat file, select all file types so it shows up
  • In the Text Import Wizard
    • Select delimited, start import at row 1
    • select comma as delimiter
    • check that data preview to see the strain and stress displayed in separate columns
    • general data format
  • Create an overall graph
    • Select data to chart
    • Insert tab at top, select scatter so you get an XY chart
    • Chart tools tab at top to format graph
    • Design tab select first chart layout
    • Layout tab Labels Add Title, Axes labels with units, series name
    • Right click on horizontal axes, Format Axes
    • Adjust displacement axes scale max as fixed to eliminate most of the useless 0 force displacement at the end.
  • Create a graph of the elastic region
    • copy the above graph
    • Adjuste the displacement axes scale max as fixed to show only up to the max
    • Lebel Vertical axis load (pounds)
    • Label Horizonal axis Displacement (0.001')
  • Analyze - Create excel formulas to calculate
    • create labels with written out equations with units in column A
    • In column B put the excel formulas.
    • Add them as series to the graphs
      • calculate youngs modulus from slope
      • calculate yield point
      • calculate ultimate tensile strength from max
The attached SSA 1000 recalibration.doc describes how to recalibrate.
  • The wires to the cycle start switch were broken.
  • The calibration voltage was adjusted from 0.3V to the correct 0.5V.
  • brass2011may23.dat (attached) shows that we still have the problem. The force increases for ~10 cycles with no change to the displacement.
  • steel postcal with clearance has only 6 zero displacement points and shows most of the elastic region
  • I increased the initial clearance to 2 full turns, and this provides a normal looking stress-strain curve. The sample threads are 1/4-20, so this provides 2/20 = 0.100' of clearance.
  • It works with 4 turns of clearance = 0.200'
  • It works with 1/2 turn of clearance = 0.025' clearance
  • A finger tight clearance has 17 steps =0.017' where the force increases but displacement still shows zero.
  • The range of the machine is

Structural Stress Analyzer

The third edition of the popular Structural and Stress Analysis provides the reader with a comprehensive introduction to all types of structural and stress analysis. Starting with an explanation of the basic principles of statics, the book proceeds to normal and shear force, and bending moments and torsion.
